Black Hat Founder: Recent Attacks Good for Security

Kicking off the Black Hat USA Conference in Las Vegas, founder and director Jeff Moss discussed that regardless of the fact this threat to landscape is sophisticated and is continuing to gain complexity, there is a collective that has raised awareness within organizations and international governments about the necessity of cyber security
The landscape was found to have major trends that included raised awareness within organizations, increasing attention to cyber security at the government level and a more concentrated effort to comprehensively protect Internet infrastructure at its core. This trend is attributed to the researchers that speak openly about their findings.
Historically, the Black Hat conference was the harbinger of future security trends. It made us face the questions about what hackers are doing. And it made us evaluate solutions to these actions. “Stories that happened at Black Hat affected the world later.” Moss stated.
With the evolving awareness, it is easier to make a case for security at the executive level, and for security to be part of the conversation earlier in the business decision making process. Moss states: “If you involve us in the decision making process, we can help you. If you only call us when the house is on fire, you have much fewer options.” More venders were reacting deliberately and intelligently when a security vulnerability is discovered with one of their products—a sign that the industry is collectively maturing.
As such, organizations initiating the conversation earlier will have more control over how security can add value to their business. Another trend that Moss said was gaining traction was international corroboration around cyber security. The U.S. is outlining the targeted cyber threats within its boundaries with strategies to protect the nation’s infrastructure. “That makes the U.S. the first to publish a national document that lays out policy goals”, Moss states.
