Having trouble getting your email to sync with your new phone? Here are some steps that might help get you started on reading emails on your hand-held device.
Most phones have an option to setup email through the settings which can usually be found on the home screen. Locate something like ‘Account Setup’ or ‘Add Accounts’ and select it (On the Android platform for example you would go to Settings -> Accounts & sync -> Add account and then select either Google for personal email and/or Corporate for an Exchange account). From here you can select what type of email account you would like to add and in most cases all you need to provide is your username (email address) and password and the phone does the rest. You may be prompted to give a name to the new account which is somewhat important if you want to add more than one email account to your phone.
You may be prompted if you would like to add a POP account or IMAP account. If you have another place where you check your email (Outlook, webmail, other phone) the best thing to select is IMAP because it will keep your email in the cloud and mark those as read that you have opened. This way your inbox will look the same across all platforms.
If you would like to add an exchange account to your phone you need to see your IT provider for information on server names and other configurations. Keep in mind however that some phones don’t like to play nice with Exchange email (we are looking at you Blackberry) and so you may need to work around a couple of obstacles if you are trying to add an exchange account. For non-exchange accounts on Blackberry only allows you to sync tasks, calendars and contacts but not emails between Outlook and your phone via the Desktop Manager so to keep your mail the same on your computer and Blackberry use IMAP when adding a new account.
