A Contract Between You and Me:
info@drakehs.com

It's the holiday season. Your children will soon be out of school and have more time to be on the internet. Maybe it's time for an internet contract between your child and yourself.

I know it sounds crazy to have a written agreement with your child, but it is a good way to have your expectations stated clearly. This way your children will know where you draw the line on issues brought up by the internet.

Before your kids hit the Net running, establish an understanding between your child and yourself. One way to establish this relationship is to create an agreement that is accessible to both of you. Your contract should include the following provisions:

  • I will not give out personal information like my name, address, or school.
  • I will talk to Mom and Dad about things I am uncomfortable with.
  • I won't set up meetings with a stranger when I'm online.
  • I will ask Mom and Dad for permission to upload any pictures.
  • If I don't like what somebody says or if it's mean, I won't respond to that person.
  • I will visit only the sites that Mom and Dad approve.
  • I won't give my password to anybody online. Only my parents will know my password.
  • I won't download files unless Mom and Dad say it's OK.
  • I won't be mean to others online.
  • I'll inform Mom and Dad about the sites I'm visiting.
This is just one example, other contracts are available at www.safekids.com

Anything goes on the Internet, but we shouldn't be afraid to let our children explore the possibilities. Be vigilant, be wise, and most of all, don't discourage your child getting online. Participate in your child's adventures and help your child understand and conquer this new world that is such an essential part of life today.
