Tech Tip for November 2nd, 2005
Wireless Internet Mike High So you've purchased that new laptop. It is completely loaded with all of the newest accessories. The one most important things of course was the ability to go wireless. The laptop finally arrives, or you get it home from your local electronics store, and you are ready to get on the internet. You unpack everything and get through the initial setup. You open up the web browser and wait. After a few seconds you get 'The Page Cannot Be Displayed' error. What happened? You're sure you bought the model with wireless. Unfortunately you are not the only person to have thought that buying a laptop with wireless was going to give you wireless internet. This is not the case. The wireless will allow you to connect to a wireless network provided by a wireless router. The wireless internet you hear so many people talk about allows the internet signal from your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to get the internet to your house. Once the signal gets into the house you then run it into a wireless router. This is what will get the signal to your wonderful new wireless laptop. These are just very basic principles of both situations. The idea of this tip is to explain that just because you have wireless on your laptop does not mean it gives you wireless internet without some other equipment. There will someday be a time when you can walk around outside anywhere and get wireless internet, but for now this is what we have to work with. If you would like more information on how you can get internet access on your laptop from anywhere in your house call Drake Hardware & Software @ 319-752-1155 and one of our consultants will be happy to help you. |
